It was one of the first tunes recorded by Galax, Virginia area fiddler Kahle Brewer, with guitar accompaniment by the under-appreciated Ernest V. “Pop” Stoneman, in 1926. Its second part goes up the neck, first in a 3-5-7 position, which requires a bit of left-hand stretching, and then, in the fifth and sixth measures, into a fifth-through-eighth-fret passage.
